Non Attachment

When Tony mentioned wanting to shave his head, I jumped at the opportunity to cut some hair with absolutely no attachment to the result. I didn’t have much of a plan beyond tuning in to what Tony’s hair would naturally want to do at each length. Letting growth patterns, cowlicks, density, and texture lead the way. I wanted to photograph this. I wanted to document the process through my eyes in attempt to share my love for the process. At first, I had a vision of how I wanted the photos to look. It was flustering trying to focus on that while trying to connect with hair. Once I let go of the result of the photos, fully detaching from expectation, everything started to flow.

I didn’t want to fuss with styling. I wanted to use product to assist the journey. Something that doesn’t build up or get sticky or flakey or greasy. I decided to use DEDE hair mist to keep the hair damp and workable and chose to use Dry Wax. On wet hair. It worked incredibly well!! I LOVED the wax as a cutting agent, assisting with crispy partings and easy to pick up sections. The product was light, didn’t gunk up my scissors, and it left the hair so soft once dried. As you can see, we achieved so many different looks with just the one product and letting the hair air dry while I worked. I was very much embracing the spirit of my last blog post, finding many “golden” styles. Everyone has a variety of unique styles that their hair will take easily to.

Tony is part of my yoga community. We shot the whole thing in the shala, with the help of our teacher, Aimee, who did all of the styling.
